Claudia Caviezel used Japanese craft techniques to create framed prints that reflect stories and places she experienced during her 2024 Japan residency.
Each digital print starts as a collage of photographs she took in Japan and paintings she made in Switzerland interpreting Suminagashi floating ink technique on Japanese washi paper. She adapted Yakisugi – the traditional Japanese technique to char structural timber – to treat the frames. Caviezel burns the wood with a propane torch, brushes and rubs the charred surfaces, and seals them with plant-based oil.
